I know I’ve been back from Portugal for some time and haven’t posted about the trip. Sorry for that.
I was in Porto, Portugal from January 24-31 to attend the annual Bobcatsss symposium on “Challenges for the New Information Professional.” While there, I presented a poster on “Librarian 2.0 and Collection Development: Is there Benefit to Adding User Generated Content to Library Collections?” (If you really want to see my poster, it’s available here.) It was really interesting to meet librarians and library students from across the world. I think almost every continent was represented.

But more about Porto – there are a lot of old churches, tripe, salt cod, and shoe stores (in that order). There was also a lot of rain. It rained almost the entire time we were there, so most of my pictures are from the 2 half days where it didn’t rain and we did as much as humanly possible in that time. So what did we do? We went shopping, wandered up and down a lot of steep, meandering streets to look at old churches and buildings, had a port wine tasting, toured the local public library, toured the Stock Exchange Palace, rode the funicular up and down the steep hill near the river, and tried to find tasty food. As I mentioned before, there’s a lot of tripe and salt cod, so I had a hard time finding delicious things to eat. We did end up finding a Turkish restaurant near our hotel where we ate dinner the last two nights. They had great falafel and pizza (oddly enough). Porto also has great wine. There’s port, which is what the place is known for, but they also had great vino verde or green wine.

You can see more Portugal pictures on my Flickr.
